I have a tantrum for you today, and boy am I upset! I have been trying to eat healthier and loose some weight, but here is my dilemma - it is very expensive to eat healthy!
The more FRESH foods I get and the more UNprocessed things I buy the more my food bill goes up! I know that it is healthier to eat a REAL FRESH green beans for dinner, but the FRESH frozen are actually cheaper - and even more so when you add in a coupon!
So here is my question, how can it be cheaper to eat healthy? I DON'T have room for a garden. I DO shop at my farmer's market. I DO use fresh bags to help keep my fresh food FRESH longer.
For those of us who are trying, why is it so expensive? Why is it cheaper to go to McDonald's and by a 29 cent hamburger than to make a sandwich? Why is it about the same to make chicken at home as it is to BUY a bucket at drive through? And cookies? I can buy a whole pack of them for the price of the four I would need to make them from scratch.
In the end I am just wondering if I am alone. Does anyone have any idea of what can help with this? I know this can't just be ME!

Today I am featuring sweetemmajean. Her fresh fruit and veggies are crafted by hand and don't THEY look good? I just love what this mother had done to 'keep sharp'. Starting with shoes for her little ones, she has really developed some great pattern. Please go visit her and remember to let her know where you heard about her!

I SO hear ya on the cost of eating healthier! I JUST had this discussion with hubby, after buying some oat whole grain bread versus the bleached out white the kids like. The healthier bread was almost a whole dollar more, which may not seem like a lot to most, but we eat a lot of bread. And forget making our own bread, cost and not to mention time involved works out to way more than the couple bucks even for the healthier stuff! And I went to a farmers market where there was some great looking spaghetti sauce the guy made from stuff from his garden - $10!! Newman's Own in s cheaper sauce, at $2.60 something, and seems to have good ingredients, so why pay $10 for what you can get and dress up a bit at home for around $3??? Sorry, I rant about this often, so totally agree with you. You are not alone.

ReplyDeleteThank you!! I am so glad that I am not alone! I want to support the local farms/ranches, but it is very expensive. Talk about 'setting us up to fail' with our diets! I am not sure if I can cut costs and my waistline at the same time! Thank you for your comment! ~KM
The same conundrum here! The fresh fruits at the regular grocery stores taste like cardboard! I can only eat apples if they are organic -- and therefore more expensive, but they're not cardboard! And peaches, HA! CARDBOARD. And they grow peaches here in Texas! But, we stopped at the local farmer's market yesterday and got THE BEST peaches and cantaloupe you've ever tasted! And the cost was not any more than at the grocery. (Plus we shop at a bare bones, carry only their own brand, store for stuff like cereal, eggs, milk, cheese, etc. and they are super cheap! So that helps the pocketbook!
ReplyDeleteBut, I definitely agree, it's expensive to eat healthy -- and don't even get me started on vegan for my daughter!!
I feel the same way. It is soooo expensive to eat healthy...but in the long run, it'll be worth it. My family and I have been trying to fast food for a few months now. I did indulge in some a few weeks ago and I felt so gross after!
ReplyDeleteSo in the same boat KM!! Though our Farmer's Market is actually WAY less expensive than the grocery store and they have a mid-week market on Wednesday's, so I don't have to worry about spoilage. I am DETERMINED to get this all figured out... my hubby has lost 90lbs... looks and feels great, I WANT, NEED that!! Not to mention I now weigh more than him... NOT good! Do you can?? I am thinking that next year I need to learn how to can, maybe that will help with the food bill?
